Has anyone had their dc's immune system checked after frequent illnesses?

DD2 (19mo) has been ill pretty much constantly since April. Mostly it's been ear infections, for which she's having grommets now, but she's also had croup, a skin infection that wouldn't go away, really bad mouth ulcers and a UTI. The paed we saw in A&E the other night mentioned it might be worth having her immune system checked but I am thinking that with all those ear infections and being on antibiotics all the time, it's no wonder that she can't fight infections any more. What does everyone think? Can I do anything to boost her immune system?

hi schulte, yes my ds2 (25 months) had his immune functon tested (among a whole host of other tests for cf among many others) last march after a 9 month period of constant, back to back illness and antibiotics (ear, throat and chest infections often requiring hospitalisation including a hospital stay of a week for rsv, bronchiolitis and pneumonia, admitted last christmas eve) as well as tummy bugs and goodness knows what else. thankfully, all came back clear but he is having a rough winter again... he has had croup , countless colds and is currently on his 3rd course of antibiotics in as many weeks for a severe ear infection...i feel your pain (and to top it all, ds1 has just had his tonsils and adenoids out and is poorly again Sad

Hi My dd who is now 5 was constantly ill from the age of 9 months until she was around 2. She had a whole host of tests and thankfully all came back ok. It was decided however that her immune system was low even though nothing significant in blood test. She was put on a low dose ot trimethiprim every night for around 18 months and then weaned off it. When she came off it she had nothing significant. She has now been off the low dose antibiotics for 2 years and is a very healthy little girl.

During the time she was on the low dose antibiotics she didnt get any viruses or infections and it meant we could get back to normal life, when she was ill all the time I had had to change my job to take her out of private nursery cos she was in hospital more than she was there. It is awful when they are constantly going from 1 infection to another and you have my sympathy.

Thanks all. Hmmm, I was thinking if I take her ear infections out of the equation, she's probably had a 'normal' number of viruses and infections. One thing I have noticed though is that she rarely gets a fever - and never with her ear infections. Is that a bad sign?

ds2 had a full blood check after many months of recurrent illness, he also was very sleepy even when well.
I knew he had a crap immune system as he was a very prem baby & does have some long term disabilities as a result... anyway.
GP carried out the test that showed that although his iron levels were just about OK his blood or body wasn't fully able to absorb all the iron something to do with the shape of the cells?? This was a few yrs ago so I maybe remembering bits of it incorrectly.
He was given iron tablets & something else to take & was re tested over the following 12 months where his levels gradually came back up.

So def worth getting checked out!

Poor thing. She won't like having blood taken... she's constantly prodded by doctors Sad

blood test was fine, if done by soemone used to taking blood from children should be a quick painless job.

Dont know if no temperature is a bad sign, my dd was constantly getting temps even when she was not ill x
