Does nurofen give children tummy ache? DD had a dose for a migraine at 3.40 and is now in tears saying she can't walk without her tummy aching Sad.

Do you think she's got a bug? There are loads going round up here. Hope she feels better soon.

ItalianLady · 23/11/2010 16:43

She says she is really hungry but can't eat anything.

Any suggestions please?

I don't know about a bug. She was at the doctor's yesterday and was dx with migraines which is why she is having the nurofen, and she is not one to moan when there isn't anything really wrong.

She is now managing to eat a bit.

Thank you.

How old is she? Has she tried to go to the loo - mine are always complaining of tummy ache when they need a poo (possibly tmi....)

You could ask her if there is anything she thinks she could eat. My dd can always force down a few plain crisps when she has had a tummy bug.

ItalianLady · 23/11/2010 16:55

I always ask that too and she did go.

She has managed to eat chicken goujon, cauliflower and carrots and is now having a home made hot cross bun and asking for apricots and dates. I am left feeling frazzled and with a melted plastic carton on my hob!

Migraines can manifest as stomach aches in children. Not sure if you get them at the same time as the headache though. Apparently I used to get a lot of stomach aches as a child and the Dr's told my Mum they were migraines.

ItalianLady · 23/11/2010 17:12

Oh right.

She has a follow up appointment later in the week.

Am I right in thinking I can alternate between nurofen and calpol? The nurofen is 3 times a day but she had some at 7 and still had a headache at 9. She has had more at 3.40pm but was then stuck when she said her tummy hurt.

She is now skipping HmmGrin.

She hasn't complained of pain this afternoon and evening but is going to the doctor's tomorrow and I am taking her for an eye test on Monday afternoon as well.

I don't think she can be in pain now as she has just given me a load of back chat Hmm.

Nurofen can give you stomach ache esp if not taken with food-causes gastric irritation. Some children seem to be more susceptible to this. You can give at the same time or alternate brufen and calpol-makes more sense to alternate but essentiall ythey follow different pain pathways...

Maybe that was it. She had the nurofen at 3.40 and had only had a snack half an hour before. We stopped the calpol as it wasn't taking the pain away for her. Thank you.
