Steroid Cards -- Anyone have one?

DD (4) is asthmatic and recently was given a 2 week course of steroids. She's also on steroid inhalers. On the prescription it states: 'carry your steroid card.' We weren't given one, and not sure the reason for carrying one?

I have one. Its incase of emergencies. For example if your DD was to be rushed to hospital, the the medical professionals would need to be aware if they were on this drug.

DH has one, it's because people on long-term steroids can become ill if they stop taking them suddenly. This is not the case for short-term courses.

She should have a steroid card if she is on regular steroid inhalers. Or at least that is the practice in our PCT.

steroid cards are required to be carried in the case of emergencies as your body reacts differently to shock if you are on steroids. paramedics need to know as they need to administer other drugs to counteract shock.I believe it suppresses adrenalin production which is a necessary part of the shock rection to protect the body from trauma. also it is required for interactions.

for an acute treatment with tablets it is not that necessary but for chronic use,yes

Thanks for the advice. Called her GP and he thinks she should carry one.

Any ideas how a 4 year old carries it? Hmm

you can get a medic alert bracelet and have her treatment engraved on it.. your surgery should have a leaflet on the bracelets available.
