Desmomelt - bedwetting medication

DS 8 yrs has been taking 120 mcg tablet at 8pm every night. By 10.30pm he has wet the bed so doesn't even work for a few hours. The wet again in the morning.

This week we have been trying to give him the tablet (which melts in mouth) at 10pm when he is asleep but cant get him to take it as it wakes and unsettles him.

Next week we go on to give him two at 8pm and are hoping the two tablets work.

Anyone had experience of DCs taking this medication?

My son had this and it didn't work, we had alarms, waking every 2 hours, but nothing worked.
It took until he was 12 until he eventually grew out of it.

DS is on it, he started on one tablet which had no effect whatsoever, the dosage was increased to 2 tablets and he managed to stay dry until about 6am so at least he was getting a nights sleep though the bed was still wet.
This continued until he was 13 and (touch wood) he seems to have cracked it!

desmo in any form didn't work with dd1 or ds1. (night time enuresis is either caused by non-production of hormone which meds fakes, or too deep a sleep - which meds won't fix)

so meds didn't work with mine because they were sleeping too deeply.

for that you need an alarm. dd2 was dry in days when we used one (try malem alarms if this is the case with your dc). literally days. i was astounded.

the jury is still out with ds1. he refuses to use an alarm and takes it off when we leave the room. we just don't know whether he's doing it consciously or unconsciously. he just unlpugs it at some point in the night.

Have you doubled the dose after 2 weeks? thats the normal advice. If that doesn't work then take him off it for 6 months then try again.
Make sure he is drinking plenty during the day, preferably only water, limited juices and squash and NO blackcurrent.
He should be taking it when he goes to bed, no drink for at least an hour before bed and double weeing, thats go for a wee, do teeth then wee again.
All desmomelt does is boost the hormone needed to stop wetting( can't remember the name!!) your son will be producing some hormone but not enough.
In the uk desmomelt is only licenced for 2 tablets in america they can take 4 hence they get the bigger boost.
My ds is also 8 and is very wet in night time nappies which are wet every night.
We are taking a break from desmomelt as advised if it doen't work within a few weeks you have to wait until his body produces some more and then desmomelt makes up the difference.
Don't stress its not worth it, we are going to have another go in the spring and try without nappies as well as desmomelt.

dan, have you tried an alarm?

my ds whi is 8 was given this in may this year, he took every night for 3 weeks, the consultant said it should have worked within a week, so he is off it them now.... he isnt on anything and wets the bed 2-3 times every night... we are hoping he will soon grow out of it ... the nurse sai this could take years

did you up the dose to the max thisis? did they not suggest lending you an enuresis alarm?

they offered us the alarm but basically said they were rubbish and would keep going off and waking everyone up, we decided against it (our house is quite small and you have to get to dds room through ds room)

DS is now taking two tablets at 8pm. This is much better but he is still taking up soaked at 3am. This has been happening for the last 5 nights. Just hoping its going to get better especially for his confidence.

lol - the whole point of the alarm is that they wake you up - not sure how that could be described as rubbish! and they'll only keep going off if he wets, that's sort of the design feature.

it only took two weeks with an alarm for dd1 - she was 8 iirc.

if you aren't keen, it's fine. malem make the best ones we've come across, for anyone else that's looking. they come with 8 different alarms and a vibration feature.

dd, are you at the max dose now? it does sound as though it's helping.

madwoman - not sure what the maximum dose would be for an 8 year old. hes on 2 x 120 mcg tablets each night. Not really sure if its working or not as before medication he could have a few nights when he would be dry until 2pm - 3pm.

not sure. we were given a starting dose and a max dose that we could take it up to if it wasn't having an effect - over a period of time. someone on a thread the other day noted that in the us there is a much higher dosage allowed than in the uk, though.

some dryish nights has to be a positive though - moving in the right direction at least!

i have just started giving my 5 yr old this tablet tonight , if in 2 weeks it does not seem to be working then been told to up the dosage im hopingit will work :)
