Bald spot on ds head?

LargeGlassofRed · 18/11/2010 07:43

Ds1 almost 13, has a bald spot on the crown if his head there looks like there was a spot there before, it's about the size of a ten pence peice and totally smooth.
Any ideas? Not sure what I should do? If anything? Thanks

Has he always had it? I had a cousin who always had a bald spot of a similar size. It never got any bigger and he's well into his thirties now.

Thanks prudence, no only just appeared in the last few weeks.

DS3 had a few alopecia patches a year or so ago - just came out of nowhere, no additional stresses or anything, bad enough for me to fret and google and visit the GP - and now they've just gone of their own accord. It just happens sometimes, apparently. Sometimes the hair grows back a different colour - we were quite disappointed when it didn't.

There is a link between alopecia and gluten intolerance, apparently. Might be relevant, might not :).

Thanks pixie and hassled will keep an eye on it and check if there are any more patches, he doesn't seem under any stress but difficult to know at this age. Interesting about the gluten link, again don't think this is a problem though. He had a few health problems earlier in the year and I remember at the time him having very odd blood results, but as far as I know that's all fine now.

My son has a similar patch, he's 10 now, and had it since 3 - GP says it was caused by tinea (ringworm of the scalp) and will not re-grow.

LargeGlassofRed · 19/11/2010 21:52

Thanks fivecents, you know I think it might me ringworm, will get him to gp next week.

Does he pick his hair? i went through this stressful time around 13 and picked a small bald patch in my hairShock...my mum took me to a trendy hairdressers and she showed me what I had done (in a nice way) and I was mortified - stopped the habit straight away

LargeGlassofRed · 16/12/2010 17:59

Hi janx, no he doesn't pick it at all, he has bad acne the moment though.

Poor thing - it is such a difficult age to be having other things on top of it - hope you manage to source the problem soon

LargeGlassofRed · 16/12/2010 19:48

Thanks Janx, really hope it is a short term thing
