dd is 3.4 and has had a cough and cold for a week.
ive been giving her tixylix (sp?) before nursery and before bed.
she coughs and i can hear mucus and she has been sick a few times but its not sick just the mucus coming up.
she struggles to blow her nose.
today she has played but looked very red so i took her temp with an ear thermometer and it said 35.3, not sure how accurate that is.
she is very teary and napped in the day today which she never does.
she was awake several times last night crying and coughing.
can the doctor give her anything or is it just a cold and keep giving her cough medicine?
thanks

Sounds viral to me so the doc won't give you anything. Have you given her any ibuprofen/calpol that will help with the symptoms.
The temp was low so I'm not sure it can have been accurate.

familyfun · 07/11/2010 21:17

ive got calpol but havent given her any as she hasnt had a high temp all week, would it help?

Try Sterimar - it's saline nasal spray. It clears out the mucous in about five seconds. I could not believe it when the GP suggested it but honestly it blew my head cold away and my cough vanished within an hour!

Doctor cannot give much to help really. Unless she is wheezing there is v little treatment for congestion.

familyfun · 07/11/2010 21:20

no she isnt wheezing but just coughs and coughs till she sicks it up.
will try the saline drops thanks.

I always give either calpol or nurofen before bed if mine have a cold. It helps with headache and general symptoms. I usually don't give it in the day just before bed.

familyfun · 07/11/2010 21:28

may consider calpol tomorrow then.
im tempted to keep her home from nursery tomorrow if she is up in the night again and still very chesty tomorrow, dont want her to think she can stay off whenever but she has seemed poorly today.

If it's going on and on it may be worth going to the GP just to check there isn't an underlying chest infection which would respond to antibiotics. I'd leave it another week to see if it clears first though. Unless she's getting distressed.

familyfun · 07/11/2010 21:31

im hoping it will start to clear soon but dp has had it 2 weeks now and ive got it too.
im 37 weeks pregnant so dont want it hanging on much longer.

no help for the cough, they seem to linger on for ages after the cold has gone. if she is bunged up try a plug in karvol thing (from chemist or supermarket) it is like one of those plug in air fresheners but it blows out karvol, they clear your nose and help sleep.

blinks · 07/11/2010 21:32

hmmm the only bit that worries me is the vomiting... tonight try things like propping her head up when sleeping, wet towel on a warm radiator, vicks rub and if she's still being sick with the cough tomorrow, get her seen. any sudden rise in temp through the night get her seen faster.

familyfun · 07/11/2010 21:34

she is asleep now, will put some vicks.
its not really vomit, just the mucus but i will keep an eye on her.

I'd try olbas oil

Medised might help but both it and the tixylix are now only for the over 12s

familyfun · 08/11/2010 14:49

dd was up in the night coughing again but was fine once up this morning so ive sent her to nursery with cough medicine, hope she is ok. Smile
i only bought her the tixylix last week and it said aged 2+ so surely is ok to use??

I think you should get her seen- could be chest infection.

Also not very considerate to send your coughing child to the nursery so it can infect all others, tbh.

And staying at home and resting would be better for her, as well.
