db's dc (18m) have both had mmr. last thursday they had contact with a toddler who had mmr but on friday the mother was told he had mumps. oblivious to this information db took his children to see a friend today who is pregnant and has come home to find a message on the answerphone about the toddler having mumps despite the mmr. Is the pregnant friend in danger of being exposed to mumps? db's dc are teething but otherwise fine.

I told db to check with the health visitor. Anyone know what they should do? Contact the pregnant friend and cause her to worry or find out the facts first then contact the friend

the incubation period is 14-25 days (average of 17 days) so even if the kids were infected they would not be at the contagious stage which is 1-2 days before the symptoms and for 5 days after. The MMR jab gives up to 95% immunity so they may not have caught it anyway.

How pregnant is the friend? According to the NHS website women who develop a mumps infection during the first 12-16 week of pregnancy have a slightly higher risk of miscarriage. There is no evidence that mumps causes birth defects.
