I'm thinking moistening the air type for a coughy child, especially at night. Are the warm air ones better than the cold steam.? Have looked on amazon and read the reviews and am more Confused than ever!

Sorry i don't know the answer, but i put dishes of water on top of the radiators, that seems to moisten the air a bit, also a couple of drops of eucalyptus oil , or lavender in there too helps..

warm mist is better than ultrasonic
esp if you have hard water

We got this one a year or so ago and I'm completely happy with it.
You can also get eucalyptus to add to it which helps with colds. I liked the idea that it heats the water which maybe meant less bugs growing in the water. Also it has a timer which switches it off after ( I think ) 12 hours so you don't have to remember to turn it off in the morning. Seems remarkably quiet & doesn't seem to disturb dd at all. You need to remember to take it apart & clean & dry it if not in use - I forgot about it over the summer and then realised one day there was a sort of yellow slime growing inside Shock- won't do that again! I usually soak the two containers in milton now & again as well as rinsing it out most days after use

Thank you bubble2bubble (v appropriate name) I think personable recommendation is always better than manufacturer hype. Will be off to amazon!

we got one from john lewis brent cross kids dept for about £30 called NScessity (thats the correct spelling-odd brand name) ionic humidifier with night glow.

its an ultrasonic one and the air is cold whihc i prefer as our DC are v small.

My son used to get terrible croup and has not had it since we have used it- dont know if this is coincidence or fact that we put it on at first sign of a cough (hes only 3 now so young to have grown out of it).

Only downsides- quite noisy- but we just wait til hes asleep to put it on and it doesnt wake him.

And it has an awful blue light you cant turn off- but we cover it.
