DD aged 6 has got rip-roaring tonsilitis with v smelly phlegm. We're 7 doses along with antibiotics but am wondering when they will start working. She can't blow nose as so bunged up despite olbas oil everywhere and it hurts her head. Temp has gone up again now 38.6, was 38.8 under armpit at lunch so she's on calpol and nurofen. any advice on how to help her through this the poor lamb is feeling rotten.

Try to let her drink regularly, sips of water, chamomile tea (not juice - too acid, not milk - increases phlegm). Keep a close eye, if anti-biotics is not working back to GP, maybe needs different ones. I would have expected marked improvement after 48 hours of anti-biotics ....

had it regularly as a grown up and know it's awful. Just try to keep temp down - calpol and neurofen should help - space them out (I used to have one every 2 hours) so something taken regularly. Obviously keep within dosage limits. Keep her cool. I know this sounds obvious - but don't cover her up with duvets and have heating on full blast. Open a door or windows - I found once my temp reached a certain level i started vomiting. Maybe cold flannel on forehead. Better to be cold (and shivering if need be) and keep it down. Feed jelly or sprite (lemonade with sugar) - sugar helps fluids stay in stomach. Antibiotics start to work 2-3 days later in my case. If she's old enough to gargle, gargle with salt water. Seemed to knock the pustules off back of throat - urrgh I know. Really sympathise - tis the worst thing ever. Usually lasts about a week in my case.
