10 month old with constant runny nose

My DS has had a constant runny nose for over 2 months now and I'm not sure what's causing it. Sometimes it's yellow/ green but mostly clear. Mornings are worst and his nose is almost blocked full of green snot ( sorry tmi) as are cot sheets.

2 wks ago he had a rash and was poorly. Dr thought viral infection but wasn't sure so put on antibiotics anyway as I mentioned the ?cold / runny nose.
Nothing has changed.

I've been looking on the Internet and there seems to be a few common causes
asthma
enlarged adenoids or tonsils
dairy allergy

he's been in formula since 1 month old and had cheese, yoghurt etc since 6 mths so don't think it's dairy.

Anyone suggest what it could be?

Hiya, that is a misconception [hsmile] he could just be intollerant of dairy as opposed to allergic. My dd was like this at a year, by the time she was 2.5 she was deaf due to severe nasal/ eustation tube blockage - all caused by a dairy intollerance.

Does anyone in your home smoke? Even outside? I know of children who react quite strongly in the same way - sinus congestion...

Nobody in either side of the family smokes, none our friends do either. I try to stay away where i can if out and about.

As for dairy intolerance rather than allergy, I guess it's possible and something to mention to my HV or GP. Not sure if they could do any tests for this. There's no allergies in the family either.

Yes there are tests for dairy intolerance. They are done differently according to age. You didn't say how old, but the ref to cot sheets suggests youngish.
The problem is that most of your suggestions as to causes are all linked. They are part of the atopic conditions that can be inherited - hayfever, asthma, allergies, intolerances, skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis and hives. They are conditions where the body's immune system has become 'over active' to a stimuli with various results.
'Nasal disturbance' as my GP referred to it as, could just be a symptom of his immune system reacting to a stimuli. It could be dust, animal hair, detergent - the list could go on and on. Finding the cause is the hard part! As you say, aside from this he is healthy. I hope you get to the bottom of what might be causing it.

Most HV's and GPs IME don't believe that a dairy intolerance could cause any form of nasal congestion. It does and can, as can many other things as Auntevil says. Generally HV's / GPs don't lie people to experiment with food exclusions in young children in case they don't get all the vitamins/ minerals they should.
