Asthma wheeze - how quickly can it come and go?

DD1 has a cold for the last few days and a cough at night. Last night she wasn't well going to bed and developed a very bad wheeze in the night. I was awake most of the night administering Ventolin and keeping an eye on her.

At one point I was on the verge of taking her to the hospital but the Ventolin seemed to take effect and I decided to hold off.

She was quite breathless this morning so I took her to the GP. We saw a locum who I don't have a high opinion of from past experience and he said she had no wheeze at all Hmm

I was a bit surprised as less than an hour before she was definitely struggling.

I had to ask him for Prednisone as I know without it we will be in A&E later.

Can a wheeze disappeared completely that quickly?

She still seems wheezy to me and definitely short of breath when she talks a lot.

Thanks.
