Hmm. Fever with no other symptoms.

DD is 20 mo and woke up yesterday from her nap with a little fever. Behaved fine, ate well etc. Seemed hot today pm, took her temperature- it's 38.5 rectally-so low grade fever.

Now, I don't panic about fevers, had planty with DS, but they were either v.high ones lasting for a night- viral infections or ear infections or low grade but accompagnied by a snotty nose, cough etc.

DD never had a fever before and the lack of other symptoms freaks me out a bit. She was fine behaviour wise but did go to bed without trying to play or look at her books, which is unusual. OTOH, she did go to bed later than usual.

Oh, I don't know, I guess I'm a bit worried because I read so much about meningitis and how it can quickly go from a child not feeling very well to them dying within hours.

There's nothing I can do, though, is there? I'll be checking on her and if she will feel hotter, I'll take her temp.

Anyone ever had their child have a low fever without any other symptoms?

Am fretting here, calm me down, please.

Anyone?

I wonder if she could be teething? But she already has the first set of molars and it's too early for others, isn't it? She never had a fever before, though.

Mine have had temps with no other symptoms before and nothing came out of it. Either that or the other symptoms - sore throat or whatever have come a bit later. She could have picked up any little bug - there are plenty around. Her body is obviously doing its job and sorting it out. Just keep an eye on her. I know its worrying but hopefully she'll be bouncing around in the morning :)

Appletrees · 12/10/2010 21:43

Fever is usually the first sign they say so maybe something is brewing for tomorrow. But it could be just a wee thing that isn't much bother and a low temperature is enough to sort it out.

winnybella · 12/10/2010 21:47

Thank you. It's just that it's the second evening with no symptoms- I don't know why it's worrying me.

If it is a very mild virus with no other symptoms, maybe tiredness is keeping it going.

Appletrees · 12/10/2010 22:22

winny, I was just on antoheer thread and a thought occurred to me

could it be rubella? or one of those mild fifth or sixth diseases, I can't remember them all

I know rubella can be so mild in a child you barely notice it -- a fleeting temp and it's gone

My dd had this a couple of weeks ago. She is 23 months. Low grade fever particularly at night. The first day she had no symptoms at all. By the end of the second day she was a bit fed up and irritable and then developed a minor cold.

I spent 3 days deciding whether to have her seen or not and then on the 4th day she was totally fine.

I think it was probably a virus of some kind but it is worrying at the time.

I think if it was ear infection/throat/UTI then it would have got worse by now.

Probably best to keep an eye on her for tonight and see how she is tomorrow.

winnybella · 12/10/2010 22:28

She had MMR, though, so in theory shouldn't get rubella. Plus she's not in the nursery and has very limited contact with other kids, well, except DS.

Just checked on her and she doesn't seem hotter than she was before, but is sleeping soundly- normally she kicks off the duvet, turns around etc. She was like that yesterday night as well.

Could be UTI, maybe? I thought that her nappy area smelled a bit strange today.

Arrgh, I wish she had a runny nose or started coughing.

x-post suiledonne.

Yes, it seems that she's been ok during the day yesterday and today, just hot in the evening.

I started to google and read about Kawasaki disease and viral meningitis, ffs. Aaargh.

I'm really not the panicky sort usually.

I was told by my GP that a baby/toddler with an ongoing fever but no other symptoms should be tested for UTI.

In fact, this was the case with my DD at 9 months and it did indeed turn out to be a UTI.

If the fever is still there tomorrow, would it be worth checking with your doctor?

doozle · 12/10/2010 22:39

Sorry, should say that they my doc was talking about an ongoing high fever. You're pretty sure it's not a high fever, aren't you?

OnEdge · 12/10/2010 22:40

Just a thought to put your mind at rest, if it was meningitis, surely it would have kicked off big time by now.

winnybella · 12/10/2010 22:45

It was 38.5 rectally this evening. Didn't check after she went to bed, but she's not burning up-hot, but not extremely so iyswim.

OnEdge- someone on MN linked to the meningitis site and there were lots of stories of how a child were a bit under the weather for a few days and than deteriorated in a matter of hours.

I don't know, I'm used to fevers, but either proper very high ones as in ear infections or low ones with snotty nose etc. DS never had a thing like that. It's probably nothing, but something isn't sitting right with me, can't put my finger on it. Probably am just paranoid.

How was she last night winny ? Hope she is better today.

I know exactly what you mean about it not feeling right.

During the summer dd got a tummy bug - vomiting for about 24 hours and afterwards was hot and very upset in herself. I asked MIL and my sister who has 4 children and they both thought it was normal after having the bug but I wasn't convinced.

I took her to OOH doctor and she had a ear and throat infection!

She woke up and insisted on being bf non-stop throughout the night then at 5am decided she wanted to go back to her cot. She was still hot then.

She's fine now, running about, good mood, no fever, if a bit tired.

I guess I wait til tonight and see what happens- she was like that for the last 2 days, though, fine in the day, hot in the evening.

Or maybe I'll give her doctor a call and she can decide whether she needs to be seen.

doesn't sound in any way like meningitis but if you're worried get her seen to maybe get her ears/throat and wee checked...

winnybella · 13/10/2010 13:53

Well, we had a couple of dodgy poos in the am.

Went down for a nap with no temp, will see when she wakes up.

She's been cranky, but made cheerful again by a new winter hat I bought her and extatic about chocolate chip cookies I made for pudding. So not seriously ill, I don't think.

OP posts:
winnybella · 13/10/2010 13:54

ecstatic not extatic
