just wondering how anyone resolved administering fluloxicillin without it being spat back.

Pinning her arms down does not sit right with me...
A second dose been given but am not looking forward to the next one which I know she will refuse.
And if I give her something nice to eat for afterwards does that negate the drug as it is to be taken on an empty stomach?
I was just wondering how everyone else deals with this. A straw poll.

oph actually, i tell you whjat did help if your lo is old enough. we gave ds2 the syringe to do himself and he loved that. but he is almost 3

She is nearly 2 and would almost certainly throw it as far as she could. I can try it though thanks.

Try putting the syringe in her mouth first but not pushing it. She will be surprised that nothing is coming out and when she has relaxed squirt it in. Works sometimes so might n
be worth it.

Wrap her in a towel so her arms and legs are inside, it sounds cruel but it works.

Also, aim the syringe into the cheek rather than straight into the mouth. Harder to spit it out and also less likely to make DC gag.

does she like ice blocks? An ice block will numb her mouth a bit making the medicine less offensive, worked with ds from around 2. Not yet working for our 17mth old though.

I would ask for the go to prescribe it in capsule form. break open the capsules and mix the powder with nutella or strawberry syrup to mask the taste. job done.

Thanks for replies. Third dose weirdly accepted despite clearly being poisonous. When I say accepted I mean I didn't have to tie her to a chair. It was still half spat out. For future reference, I read somewhere that if you blow on the face it makes them swallow which I did and seemed to work. Bless her.

Nothing on earth is going to mask that taste - could they not have tried a little harder to make it a tiny bit more palatable?

awful awful i opt for erythromycin instead but barely any more palatable

i use flavourings such as mint/vanilla. I check with pharmacist as some cannot have milk and citrus added. My DS has fybogel - which is not only disgusting, but like wallpaper paste in texture. there is also a whole cupful! He likes that one with vanilla flavouring!

Oh it is horrible. My DD1 was on it for 4 weeks - after the first 3 she started to drink it, but until then it was always a bit torrid.

I'd recommend mixing it with jam and letting her eat a spoon of jam (highly amusing to many 2 year olds). Or let teddy do it (although this won't do anything about the foul taste). In the end though I did force it and then crammed in chocolate buttons (she had to have it - I did not want to have to go back to hospital!).

My daughter was slightly older (4) when she had to take a 7 day course of this AB and that wasn't easy either - so I feel your pain! I once dipped my tongue in it for half a second, so DD putting up with it for 7 days, 4 times a day made her an absolute hero in my eyes!!!

We worked out a technique with her, whereby the second she swallowed the AB she would drink water (quite a lot of it actually, a small cupful). The AB bottle didn't say anything about not drinking, so we figured it would be alright.

Thanks for your responses! She has rallied to the cause and whilst not fully accepting the first squirt of the syringe she sort of squares up to the next squirt. A lot of clapping from me and her sister and a glass of water on hand throughout ending in dried fruit. Bumbling through. Bumbling through!

DD2 (3) had this for a rampant eye infection in the summer- she would cry "Noooo!" when she saw the bottle so I tasted it- Jeeeeezus. How utterly, utterly horrible it is. We would have a glass of juice ready and she would have it immediately after with lots of praise. She was so stoic, bless her.
