2 year old with pneumonia - getting worried

My best friends little girl is 2.6 and has been in hospital for the last 4 days with pneumonia (the DD that is.) She doesn't seem to be responding to the anti biotics very well and is still really ill 4 days on. My friend is in pieces convinced her dd is dying. Please, any positive similar tales to reassure her with anyone? Thanks.

DD2 had this at about 18months took a good 4-5 days to get her well and still had to stay in for 8 days :( horrible time but if shes sleeping alot its a good thing, its hard for them to breath and fight the infection they need the rest.
Why does she think she is getting worse??

Smash09 · 01/10/2010 20:33

Sorry to hear this Sad
Like Pixie said, it can take a little while to get much benefit from antibiotics, and if they are the wrong sort (which the drs will be testing for) then they will change them for better ones. Is she on a normal ward or in ICU? Either way they will be keeping a really close watch on her and will have all the right stuff to hand to keep her supported till she gets better.

Pneumonia is very nasty - have had it chronically myself and it's done it's damage. But I'm sure she is in brilliant hands and have all my fingers crossed that she starts picking up.

Hugs x

I had it aged 27 and it took 6 weeks of anitbiotics and steroids. It's not a cold, not even the flu. It takes time. DD (aged 3) had it too after a near drowning and she was very weak and wobbly for a couple of weeks after the infection had gone. I feel for your friend but slow response doesn't mean it's going to end badly.

I had three different types of antibiotics before they found the variety which made a difference. Hope your friend and her little one will be fine.

my ds2 had rsv, bronchiolitis and pneumonia last christmas at the age of 14 months. the experience still haunts me 10 months on. i clearly remember how totally freaked out i felt that he was still needing regular chest suctions and his O2 levels were still dropping to around 70 even 6 days into iv antibiotics. i truly feared the worst. then he suddenly turned the corner and on day 8 was discharged (still very poorly and unable to fly home from our 'holiday' for another 3 weeks but out of the woods at least.)

my thoughts are with your friend. do keep us posted.

Thanks for the reassurance and similar stories. Shes been on ABs for a week now, by IV for the last 5 days, 3 different kinds I believe. Similar to your story zonedout, her o2 levels are still dipping and temp is still high, tho with a few drops now I think so hopefully that will carry on. To answer lisa's query - I guess she isnt seeing much improvement, is aware her DD is on loads of drugs now, and lets face it, its distressing seeing your child being nebulised etc for a week. And she isnt eating or drinking either. Mums fear the worst when its all unknown territory, and I can hear that in her voice when we talk on the phone, hence posting here.

I will certainly let her know that others have children who seemed to respond to ABs slowly, thanks for sharing that, everyone who did x

OopsDoneItAgain · 02/10/2010 14:47

Relieved to say I have had a text earlier saying she seems much better today. Hopefully the ABs have finally got on top of it. Fingers crossed. Thanks for all your info and support. x
