Ear infection without temperature?

DS2 (19 months) has a cold. He's just woken up 10 minutes after going to sleep and is fiddling with his ear a bit and generally miserable. He is usually horrid if he hasn't had a proper nap and his temperature is normal. I don't want to drag him to doctor's for no good reason. Surely if it were an ear infection he would have a temperature, wouldn't he?

swimmers ear doesn´t give you a temperature. We all get it evry summer after swimming lots but can get it all year round. Can be very very painful.

That's interesting. He did fall over in the bath last night, and his ears definitelt got water in them. Could it develop that quickly?
