Teeth or ears?

DD (17mo) is usually a happy little thing. I think she has her first molar on its way. Last night she was awake from 4:15 till 6 screaming, /calpol, nurofen and anbesol later she fell asleep on me till 8. She lasted an hour of toddler group before screaming. Fell asleep just before we got home but woke once we were home. Screamed, finally slept for 40 mins (normal nap length). Once she woke, not happy, still very sleepy. Screamed again so we gave calpol and now asleep again. Has been pulling her ears, but not sure if sore, or just tired. Temp of 37.9 - higher than normal for her.

Dr's triage phone line closed for lunch till 2. Do we phone to have ears checked as she has been a bit coldy recently or do we assume it's teeth? This is REALLY unlike her to be so miserable.

Bump - looking for advice please.

I'd get her looked at, mine never got a raised temp with teething, and the pulling at the ears thing would raise a red flag with me.

Sounds like ear ache, mine got ear infections sometimes while teething. What is her regular temp?

If you're worried, call the doctor at 2pm. It could be her teeth, could be a virus, could be an ear infection.... you've done all you can reasonably do and, if there's no improvement, always consult a doctor. They may say 'keep giving Calpol' or they could offer some other treatment. Either way they would rather give you reassurance that she's OK than there be something really wrong which gets worse or you were left fretting.

The same applies to any other illnesses, incidentally. You know your child & you don't sound like an irrational panicker. If something doesn't seem right then pick up the phone. Trust your judgement.

Thanks :) Regular temp generally about 36.5. Think we will phone. I was just dithering thinking I didn't want to take up time at the Drs for teething.

Good idea,the temp indicates something is up. My other son would get throat infection with every tooth it seemed.

Well, throat and chest are fine. The ear which she's been pulling was full of wax so the eardrum couldn't be checked so we'll have to wait and see. Her glands and temp are up and she definitely has a cold, but it's just a waiting game to see if she improves or goes downhill.

Thanks for the advice though. It's so rare now that she screams and is inconsolable (She was a 24 hour screamer this time last year, but a delight now).

Thanks Pixie. Awake from 1:30 till 4 and then woke at 6 for the day - I'm feeling rather delicate, although she seems a little better in herself today.
