scratching as soon as nappy off or in bath

My little girl of 23 months goes straight for her girly bits as soon as her nappy is off or when she's in the bath. There's no sign of any rash, just the nasty red scratches themselves if we aren't quick enough to stop her. In the bath, as well as scratching, she has a good go with the sponge down there. She's been doing it for about 3 months. She isn't scratching anywhere else.

We are trying not to make an issue of it and I try to keep her nails short but it has made nappy changing and bathtime a two man job.

Does this sound like just a developmental thing that she will grow out of? Or does it warrant a visit to the HV or GP?

Thanks

I think you should see your GP with her. Maybe thrush or lichen sclerosis?

Thrush or threadworms would be my guess. Go see the GP. :)

Sounds like a "discovering herself" thing. If there's no rash obvious and she's not trying to get the nappy off to scratch at other times then give her more bath toys to distract her.

Oh yes, hadn't thought about threadworms. Wouldn't thrush give a discharge?

Thanks, I wondered if it was thrush and I did apply the 1% cream we have for fungal nappy rash for a while. Don't know anything about threadworms or lichen, I'll look them up to see if there would be other symptoms as well. The bath is fairly full of toys but I'm going to try a bubble maker too, problem is she gets a bit too excited as it is. My hubby doesn't think its an infection or anything as she doesn't scratch if she has cbbies on during nappy change, i.e. is distracted.
