10 month old with diarrhea for over a week

Hi - just wondering if anyone could tell meif this is normal. He is pretty well in his self - although he is teething too - so a bit tetchy and not sleeping great. He is generally having up to 6 loose stools a day -a few watery. It started with a fever the staurday before last - but that went after a day and since then we have had a variety of better and worse days - with a spate of vomiting on Friday.

Phoned NHS direct and went to the doctor on Friday and they said the usual. But really just want some reassurnace that it is normal for this to go on this long and to see if anyone had any tips to get it to clear up quicker. I have had to take a few days off work as he has not been able to go to nursey.

What was "the usual" that the doctor said? Ordinarily I would have thought that diarrhoea should be checked out if it goes on for more than a day or two. If you need reassurance, I think you need to go back to the doc.

My 7MO DD has a tummy bug at the mo, and the doc said to just carry on BFing, no solids or formula, and unless she becomes dehydrated which is highly unlikely I should only bring her in if it goes on for two weeks!!!

Doctor and Nurse just said to continue feeding as usual (BRAT - is what he has mostly been having) and that he was not dehydrated and he was well in himself. Will go back tomorrow or Wednesday - I also got the impression gingerkirsty that they were not worried - DS is on formula now - but they did not say to stop giving it to him.

My DS had a dodgy tummy with a cold and it lasted about ten days. I just kept feeding him as normal as he wasn't being sick and seemed fine in himself. I gave loads of water too. It just stopped one day!

ds had diarrhoea just when he started nursery. it took 2 weeks to clear. gp said it needs to go on until all the bugs are gone and I should offer food as normal. brat not recommended. annoying I know but unless he*s not dehydrated it really is nothing to worry about.

Are you still giving him milk? many children become temporarily lactose intolerant after sickness and diarrhoea - I remember my DS being ill for about a week until I stopped giving milk and he was almost immediately cured. Worth a try, but at 10 months you may need to check with your doctor.

Thanks everyone - Mousymouse my DS has just started nursery too. Feel better that other people have experienced this too! Will take him back to the doctors later in the week and just keep offering plenty of fluids.

Oh right, thank you I've never heard that before. Toast makes more sense, babies don't normally drink tea do they?!

Our 15month old got d&v on Saturday. The v stopped after 1.5 days but the diarrhea has gone on for 3 days so far. She seems fine in herself but not eating a normal diet yet - still plain foods and no milk. We are supposed to be driving 3 hours to a wedding on Saturday. I read on the NHS website the diarrhea can last 5-7 days in infants so I just wondered what other people's experience is? Are they still contagious on days 8 and 9? Is there anything you can do to speed recovery e.g. Infant probiotic supplements? Thanks!

Just wanted to say I had this with my first baby at about 9 months. Kept taking her to Dr and HV as she had diarrhoea for 10 days. No other symptoms. They insisted it was teething which I thought was nonsense and was really worried they were missing something seriously wrong with her. Sure enough, it stopped and her first tooth appeared. Couldn't believe it!

Oh gosh I'm such an idiot - just realised your post said he had vomited too. In that case, like others have said - diarrhoea can last a while in LOs - most important thing is that they are getting plenty of fluids.

This happened twice to my DS when he was a baby.

Turned out to be temporary lactose intolerance.

As soon as I stopped all lactose products, it cleared up. I gradually re-introduced lactose after about 8 weeks.

spondoodle, you are more likely to get relevant replies to your own situation if you start your own thread. Problem with replying to old threads is that everyone just responds to the opening post and your own question gets lost in the process.

Could be a tummy bug that's taking its time to clear! My DD had a bug a few weeks ago. The diarrhoea lasted a week or so. As long as they are drinking, hydrated and well in themselves. I wouldn't panic! 👍
