How to soothe a sore & crusty cold-nose?

DS, 6 months, has had a streaming cold for a couple of days now, and his sweet little nose now has the look of the leper about it. What can I use to sooth the soreness and crusty flaky skin while I continue to wipe away the reams of snot?

bottom butter (I use the Waitrose one), or more expensively, Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream work for me

Vaseline is the only thing which doesn't sting a chapped nose, IME. In fact, I use it pre-emptively to act as a barrier against the snot onslaught.

you can actually buy something called No-sore which is a green stick of nose balm - from pharmacists. It's great!

Our paediatrician told us not to use vaseline as it contains water and that there is a risk they breathe in droplets which in very young children can cause pneumonia. We were told to gently wipe with clean tissue and not to smear anything on ...
