hi i am new to mumsnet and very worried about my three year old boy.

since been 9months old he has struggled from constipation and diarrhea. he has had lactolose and senna up until he was 2.upon this he has had his diet checked and we have spent most of our lifes back and forth to the doctors who just kept telling me to up his medication.

on his second birthday the doctors started him on movicol. this seemed to work great and slowly i have managed to start getting him of the movicol, until today. my mum was looking after him and he was sat on his potty trying to go to the toilet when she looked to wipe him he had a bit purple lump hanging out of his bum.

i took him to the doctors straight way and they referred me to hospital and told me to be prepared to go to another hospital to get it stiched back up. when we got there about 30mins of sat waitin he needed the toilet and when i looked it had gone back up.

the doctor sent us home and said if it happens again to wait an hour and if it not gone back up to go straight back on. sure enough after been back in half hour it was back but then went again 15mins later.

i am really concerned and woundered if anybody could help as i feel useless. i have changed his diet god knows how many time to try helping, i am back and forth already each week with his medication of movicol that he is on andmostly scared that things will get alot worse. please can anybody help??????????

thanks a worried mum x x

Hi littlestar

I am new to mumsnet too and found some of the threads and suggestions of other mums very helpful. I'm sorry to hear about your son and how you must be feeling! I'm afraid I don't know much about rectal prolapse but all I can say is if it happens again, just take him directly to the hospital where he will be stitched back up. They might have more trained doctors and staff who have seen cases like this and will be able to give you clear answers. I know how frustrating it is to be able to try everything but nothing seems to be working. Hope this helps. x

I was just about to post a very similar thread when I saw yours. DD is 3 and a half. She's never seemed to suffer from constipation that I have noticed but about 10 days ago I noticed blood on the loo roll when I wiped her bottom. After a couple of days I took her to the dr who said it was probably a little bit of constipation causing a slight fissure which was bleeding. So we went home and packed her diet with dried apricots (which she hoovers up and DEFINITELY not constipated now) but over the last week the bleeding has got worse and yesterday I noticed exactly what you are describing - a red, and slightly bleeding lump sticking out of her bottom. I'm trying to sort out dr appt for this afternoon as v v worried. It went back within 10 mins (I was trying to find a camera to take a picture to show the dr, but it had gone back by the time I found it). No advice yet, but I will come back on when I have managed to see the dr.

k thanks, well i have not long been back from the hospital again as my little man has been sick this morning ( which can be a cause of constipation) and he kept burning up but saying he was cold and that his bum back and belly hurt. he had the runs this morning as well so had previously taken him to the doctors. he has low blood sugar levels, dehydrated and high heart and breathing rate now.

when i noticed the purple lump i just turned up at the doctors with him and i suggest that if you notice it again you either go to hospital or just turn up at your doctors and tell them DD needs to be seen now.

keep me posted how you get on and i will do the same thanks xx
