how can i protect him from catching sickness bugs? Probiotics?

My Ds (2yrs old) has had 5 bad bouts of gastroentiritus (sp?) first one being at 16 weeks. Its horrible, will probiotics help?

Don't wish to be rude but are you being careful enough about hygiene.

Are you sure it is gastroenteritis and not an allergy, that would seem a lot of times to me.

Poor thing. When you say gastroenteritis what exactly do you mean.

For example: has he had diarrhoea which could be related to ab use.

does he go to nursery / cm / toddler group?

but yes agree kitchen / bathroom hygiene at home must be scrupulous

Probiotics won't hurt.
Washing hands (his and yours) is a big help.

Washing hands - train him to be scrupulous about washing his hands before eating etc. Clear door handles etc with anti-bacterial spray.

Probiotics after a bout of illness can help re-build the friendly bacteria.

My DS had years of at least 1 sickness bug a term. He now rarely gets them, so hopefully his immunity will build up.

If you are worried ask your GP for advice.

he does go to nursery. am meticulous with hygiene in the house,handwashing etc, think its just his weakness. Apparently my brother was just the same, and still is as a grown man to be honest (if he gets anything its stomach related)

With ref to what his symptoms are, he get has severe sickness, followed by temp, then diarrohoea

Seems a bit brighter this morning so fingers crossed.

Incidents has got less as he got older, most times he has had it its been doing the rounds at nursery (they are also very good on hygiene, i work there so i know!)

was just wondering if probiotics might offer some protection, might give them a go anyway, as ragged said can't hurt i guess

Hi appletrees, his first one did (well was after his 3rd lot i think) but not since. He gets really whingy for a few days, and then wakes in night and is sick, which continues for a few days (although fingers crossed this time seems to be just 24hrs!).

Seen GP a few times when he has had it because he can't keep water/diarolyte down even in small sips. Gp seems to think its just one of those things.

He did have a large amount of antibiotics at 5 mths as he has bronchiolitus, followed by a bad chest infection so wonder if this might have made him more prone to it? he has had a good few courses of antibiotics as well, for ear infections etc. Bless him he has not been a particularly well boy (but nothing serious for which i am very grateful)

Mrs Badger - i wondered that, but wasn't sure if you can give live yoghurt to little one (no ideas why i think this just wasn't sure)

I give DD (age 23 months) a probiotic in her milk every night. I bought capsules and open them. Knock on wood, we have not had many (any) incidents since starting this.

Antibiotics might have screwed up his gut. I would definitely go with live toy or pro biotics. Also read up on gut issues and mmr. Hope you see the end of it soon.

Found out that a friend (who brought his daughther round tuesday), well his daughter had it monday . so that likely to be where we got it from......you think he might have mentioned it!

Nursery is always a breeding ground for every bug under the sun, but good for immunity build up. Sadly lots of parents sent their children in without waiting the 48 hours since the last episode (as in the case of your dopey friend as daughter still obviously infected!)

beammeupscotty - tell me about it, i manage a nursery and the amount of parents that turn up in the evening and say, how have they been today only they were sick last night . my usual reply...are you aware of the nursery sickness policy?
