Just noticed that dd1's back doesn't look quite right.

Dd1 was sat with her back to me and I noticed that one side of her back seemed to stick out more.

Got her to remove her top and the right side of her back definitley curves out to the side. I think her right shoulder blade is also a fraction lower than her left.

Have put a pic on my profile, and would be grateful for opinions/advice. TIA

I think you should make an appt to see your GP, if you haven't already

It looks like the beginnings of a scoliosis

How old is she ?

I can't see much on your photo, but it sounds like it could be scoliiosis. They were very keen on diagnosing it at my school in the 1970s. I wouldn't worry too much - DH (35) was diagnosed with it a few years ago, but Dr reckons he has had it all his life- DH has never noticed or cared and it has never stopped him doing anything, sporty or otherwise.

Definately go to your GP, I diagnosed my younger sisters scoliosis, my Mum said I was imagining it. A couple of years later she was much better.

Dd is 12. She said she hasn't been in any pain at all, and I have never noticed it up until today.

Will make a gp's appointment

She isn't impressed atm.

It was 2 years of having to wear a brace, not nice for a teenager but it made a huge difference.
She's a physio now

Thank's unfitmother, as you say, a brace isn't ideal for a teen but if it works !

catching it early (if scoliosis is what it is) will result in better outcome and possibly least intervention

Yes, she needs a Gp visit as soon as you can to get referred to a specialist.

Have got an appointment at 5:50 today.

I had a look on a few websites relating to scoliosis, and got dd to bend forward as shown on there, and she has a definate hump on her right side and her spine does curve slightly to the right.

Can't believe I have never noticed this before. She spent almost all week in her bikini on holiday last year and I am sure it wasn't like it then.

Hopefully if it is scoliosis, I have caught it early enough for minimal treatment.

Right, gp examined her spine, said it does curve and agreed that when bent forward the hump is quite pronounced.

She said it was good that she was in no pain but that she would refer her to B'ham Children's Hospital anyway so that they can decide wether to just watch and wait or plan some treatment.

Dd is less than impressed right now.

Thank's for all of the advice, i'm really glad I took her now. Fingers crossed that the appointment comes soon and we can find out what will happen.

Dd is a bit upset that the gp actually confirmed scoliosis. I think she thought she'd say no it's fine.

Thanks for the update.

Hope dd is ok, and comes to some acceptance soon. There are some websites I think for teenagers suffering from scoliosis. I would vet them yourself first though, as I'm sure you are aware some health sites can be very (needlessly) scare-mongering

Birmingham CH will be great, she will get good advice/treatment there that is relevant to her

They may even do a watch and wait policy with her, depending how the curve progresses (or doesn't)

How old is she ? The reason I ask is, the younger it starts to develop, the more chance of needing intervention (but not necessarily)

She is a very image concious 12 yr old lol. She just said to me that she wishes I hadn't noticed it.

We'll get through it whatever happens. I actually start work at birmingham children's hospital soon too lol. Not sure how that is going to work out with any appointments that dd has but I'm sure it will all come out in the wash

I don't know whether this idea would help, but if she needs a brace could you sell the idea to her that not only would that be good as a remedy but also be something like a basque or bustier and she could end up with wonderful deportment.

I have heard that some actresses appearing in period dramas have found that wearing period costumes involving undergarments such as basques or corsets (but don't mention the latter word!) made them glide rather than walk, and they were sad to hand the costumes back and lose that experience of walking and dancing with perfect deportment.

Good idea huggly, I will tell her that if she does end up needing a brace.

I think she is worried that it will effect her dancing. She does street dance which is very energetic. She only started at Easter and did her first show recently, which she absolutly loved.

I have told her that carrying on with dancing or any other type of sport or exercise is actually encouraged, but I think she thinks I know nothing.

Think I will point her in the direction of a couple of good websites so she can read it for herself.

No experience to add I'm afraid, but I remember reading Judy Blume's Deenie when I was growing up - all about a teenage girl who has scoliosis and has to wear a brace - if your DD does end up there, might be one to have a look at?

Well I'm glad the wheels are in motion now. I'm sure you won't have to wait too long for the appt at BCH.

Keep positive - your dd will pick up on any worries that you might show I'm sure, but I think the website idea is a good one (once vetted!)
