Orthodontistry costs

Hi, would be very grateful to hear from any parents of orthodontically challenged teenagers - private or NHS, what sort of money are we talking about? I really have no clue whether a couple of years of braces is potentially thousands of pounds or a couple of hundred??

DS had a brace on the NHS: no cost to us at all. Going private, if it's only braces I think you're looking at many hundreds not thousands, but if they have to extract any teeth the cost will go up sharply.

YES. Best news ever! Thank you ragged.

Ds1 has a fixed brace on his top teeth- free on the NHS or they offered us the chance of going private for the bargain price of £4000

We had no choice but to sit it out on the NHS waiting list.

at Wilts £4k.
We were offered a private orthodontist appt. for £80 to leapfrog into the system (but then luckily an NHS appt. came open intead). It's not just the brace itself that costs a lot, but each appt. to make sure it's fitting properly adds up a lot too.

How long did your ds have to wait Wilts?

He waited about a year to 18 months I think. He was actually seen at the orthodontist really quickly, but he still had milk teeth to lose, so couldn't sit on the 'proper' waiting list until he lost those.

My two cost me £800 each - but that was 17 years ago ! the treatment lasted 2 years but we paid in installments. Speaking to someone recently £2500-£3000 depending where in the country you are. Also on whether they need fixed braces and other work so could well be dearer.
