Love: Astercote, The Whispering Knights, The Ghost of Thomas Kempe.

Are there others I should try? Reading aloud to DCs but also reliving my childhood!

Also what other writers are similar and might older DC enjoy if Lively goes down so well. We've read Charlotte Sometimes, Goodbye Mister Tom etc but I remember a few others I read as a child that I can't quite recall..Monica Dickens?

Also anyone remember A Traveller in Time by Alison Uttley - brilliant and the great 1970s serialisation?

Mrs Frisby and the Rats of Nimh

I loved it when I was small and so did ds2 (9)

Ghost of Thomas Kempe one of my all time fave books.

Also try Nina Beachcroft. Most of hers are out of print I think, and perhaps slightly darker than PL but just as absorbing and fabulously written. Cold Christmas is brilliant, but so atmospheric that it really should be read in december.

tHE Wild Hunt of Hagworthy, also by Penelope Lively isbrilliant, really scary!

Phillipa Pearce - 'Tom's Midnight Garden' and 'A Dog So Small'.
Loved Monica Dickens but sadly think she is out of print.

'the silver crown' by Robert C O Brien, same guy who wrote Mrs Frisby , is also very good.

I'm thinking about reading it to DS (8) but not sure if he is ready for it yet.

we're reading 'Stig of the Dump' at the mo, which he loves

Sorry, just reread thread title.

If you're reading for yourself, why not try Penelope Lively's adult fiction.

'Judgement Day' is very witty and thought provoking

'Next to Nature Art', is another one of my favourites.

Ebay. amazon, and second hand bookshops best place to get them now.
