Any recommendations gratefully received.

Horrible Histories are great.

Have you come across the Flavia Gemina series or the Lady Grace series?

These are, admittedly, fiction. Flavia Gemina are set in ancient Rome and Lady Grace are Elizabethan. Both feature young(ish) girls who solve mysteries. The really good point about both is the background info. DD love both series, and ingests facts about the periods almost without realising it.

Ds loved this one. Highly visual and covers all periods of history.

The Usborne first history of the world is really good, appeals to DD aged 9 and DD aged 6. Got it cheap on Amazon I think. I love Amazon.
