Audio books for the whole family

Can anyone suggest good audio books to suit a 7 yr old, 4 yr old and adults for long car journeys?

After a quick browse on Amazon, I've found Wind in the Willows, Just So Stories and a Roald Dahl collection to try. Has anyone got any other family faves?

sorry i recommend these on every audio book thread but the Hiccup books by Cressida Cowell read by David Tennant are just extraordinary. I think the best of the lot is How To Cheat a Dragon's Curse but that's probably only because it's the first one we listened to - it's not the first one. HTH.

Anne Fine's The Killer Cat is brilliant. It is read by Jack Dee and is very funny.

I'm not sure, I never saw the TV programme.

Paddington Bear (we have them on tape, but I'm sure they'll be available on CD)

There are some wonderful Roald Dahl audio books that might suit your needs.

We have that Puffin classics set which Bruffin linked to. It's great, books that DP and I are happy to listen to, 36 hours of them, and you can listen to them each several times. That one set has kept us going for several years.

BBC air some audio books, which I record.

For example Mary Poppins is on iPlayer at the moment.

2yr old's favourite story currently is The Tiger Who Came To Tea. Before that he liked Gruffalo.

5yr old likes the Roald Dahl books, including Matilda which was on BBC Radio 7 at Christmas.

I like ones which are done as a Drama/Play rather than a straight read.
Some which are just read straight from the book can be good, if the reader does different voices for different characters. David Tennant and Jim Dale (who reads the US versions of Harry Potter) both make the story come more alive.

Some TV/Movies work quite well in Audio only... such as Thomas The Tank Engine, Toy Story. Can create an issue though, 2yr old asked for Tom & Jerry... had to try to explain that Tom & Jerry would not work... they don't talk!
