Can I recommend The Magic Pudding?

dh has been reading it to my younger two (10 and 7) and it's fabulously funny and excellent to read aloud - apparently Philip Pullman rates it as the best ever children's book, which is a pretty good recommendation

Haven't read it for years, but I loved it when I was younger

Do you know the 'Uncle' books by JP Martin? Different, but I reckon if you like the Magic Pudding, you might like them too.
