would like to get a Nice Book for a baptism present - you know the sort, nice inoffensive stuff with pretty pictures. Like the collected Beatrix Potter, except not mind-bendingly dull. Does anyone have any recommendations of particular books/editions, preferably with amazon links? thanks

paulaplumpbottom · 18/04/2010 15:31

Or this?

paulaplumpbottom · 18/04/2010 15:47

Sorry that was the wrong Red Riding hood. DD's has that illistration on the front but its not that book.

The Winnie the Pooh one looks great but you tend to get a lot of Pooh/Potter/Bibles/Alice for christening/baptism presents.

My favourite is 'The Hutchinson Illustrated Treasury of Children's Literature' (ISBN
9780091761448). The good thing about this book is that it grows with the child so that they can use it from birth as opposed to many gift books that just sit on the shelf. It starts off with nursery rhymes and classic picture books (with their original illustrations) and then goes on to first classic chapter books and stories (Beatrix Potter/Dahl/Mrs Pepperpot etc and then finishes with extracts from classics such as Alice/Treasure Island/Secret Garden etc.

Try again. Not sure why it didn't work the first time...

MarthaFarquhar · 19/04/2010 13:00

thanks for those - the Hutchinson treasury looks perfect, but I can't find it in stock at Amazon or Waterstones, and sadly we've no independent bookshops here .

Hi Martha

If you check store availability on Waterstones.com you will see that quite a few stores have the Hutchinson's Treasury. They will either post it out to you or, if you speak to your local Waterstone's, they will contact one of the branches that have it in stock and get it transferred to your local branch free of charge.

MarthaFarquhar · 19/04/2010 14:43

thanks madame hooch - there is a copy in stock not a million miles from here. I'll speak to them later .

DH was given instructions and went and got the Hutchinson Treasury today.

It is beautiful. I think this might become our default new arrival/baptism present.
