How old would you say a child would need to be to have the first Harry Potter book read to them? (Assuming they are interested, with a good vocabulary and fairly long concentration span).

The first book? Okay from age 5 or 6, maybe 4 even. But that's when my kids could have followed the story. I'm sure there are MNers who mention their DC reading it by themselves at age 2 or 3.

You COULD read the first HP to a 5 or 6 year old, but I'm not sure why you'd want to. There are many more age-appropriate and better written books out there for that age group. I would leave the first HP until 7 or 8 - because for one thing, once you get past HP4, the last three are really much more suitable for age 10 and over in terms of content and interest, so why start reading them so early?
