Hi all,
I am a mum to 3 young boys, all sport mad.
My youngest (age 4) is bizaarly crazy about golf.. even has posters of Tiger Woods on his wall next to Ben 10. Given there are very few books about golf aimed at the under 50's, I decided to write a children's book about golf - Moon Golf, which I self published. It has got some quite good reviews on Amazon, so now I have the writing bug and want to try another!

So here's where I need your help... my idea is around writing stories about sports.. not to teach kids how to play, more about imaginative stories that might enthuse young boys about sports.. and also to make a change from all the books about underpants, farts and general horridness.

So my question to you all is - do you reckon this has any legs.. and if so which sports would your children be interested in (except football as there are literally 1000;s of books about this!!)

Thanks so much for your help!

were the reviews from parents or from children?

I completely agree with you about underpants, and also wizards/vampires as they get older. But Im a mum, not a kid!

I think any wittily written book has a good chance of being popular.

My DS is too young for me to give any input about his interests yet, but I think this sounds like a great idea. Agree about the underpants, farts etc. Have you got any publishing contacts who could help with this?

ninah · 12/03/2010 23:29

swimming? cricket, rugby, horse riding (polo?)
If it's well written any sport would be ok, sounds like a good plan

No publishing contact yet.. but am planning to deluge publishing agents to try and get one to take me on, as from what I understand getting a book deal is very hard without an agent!

Hi Beckyplus3

Sounds like a great idea. Keeping boys interested in books when they discover sport is a challenge, so playing on their interests sounds good.

We are looking for new authors for Q&A's at our new online book group, so if you're interested, drop us an email.

Good luck x

My DS has taken a bizzare turn and is constantly talking about tennis. Couldn't you make it semi-autobiographical and base on some sporting heroes of the last century, in name illustation etc? My son loves old Ladybird books/1950's adventure books for boys etc

There's nothing small boys like more than heroes!
