Some kind Mnetter recommended these (never read these as a child) they are wonderful. Think a little (well actually a lot) too scary for DS aged 4 but quite tempted to get these lovely hardbacks for when he is older. He is absolutely loving the 'Uncle' books which I loved as a child in the same imprint
here and thinks they are hysterically funny-DH doesn't 'get' them at all though so not for everyone.

I loved them as a child, but I'd agree that they're more for older children. I picked up a 2nd hand copy of the Box of Delights, & I've stashed it for when dd is a bit older (she's 7 atm). Agree that the Uncle books are great, too

I read my younger two The Box of Delights last year when they were 9 and 6 - they loved it and found it really exciting. Reading older classics out loud works very well, I think - obviously the pace is slower so gives them more time to digest than if they were reading it silently to themselves and I can explain any unfamiliar words and situations as they arise. We're currently working our way through Sherlock Holmes
