A bit of a long shot, but could anyone recommend books with a science fiction theme for children from 8-11.It is not a theme that appeals to me, so I have no ideas at all. Acceptable permutations might be saving the world from pollution melt down or finding another, less polluted planet. Sorry this is a bit garbled and unclear, I am desperate!

When I was little we were read Grinny by Nicholas Fisk in primary school. I remember loving his books and they are all sci fi.

Granny comes to stay and it turns out she's an alien who's brainwashed all the adults - only the kids realise she's not really their granny.

Lion Boy by Zizou Corder - adventure story, but set in a post-global-warming world (not apocalyptic, but things like petrol cars only being for VIPs etc).

Brilliant, honestly how did I live without Mumsnet. Thanks, I am off to Amazon.

Yes, Lionboy is the business.

Actually, I think you recommended it to me, Lady Glencora
