Birthday books for a 6 year-old girl?

Hi. I'm looking for ideas for books to send to my friend's dd, who will be 6 next week. I only have boys and they are younger, so not much idea about what to get. I know they've been reading Laura Ingalls Wilder and enjoying those, so something along those lines? Also, she's not a terribly girly girl. Not a tomboy, but not completely glitter and fairies either.

Any ideas welcomed with open arms.

TIA (and just off to cook dinner so apologies if I don't respond straight away).

Hiya, the 7 year old i Nanny absolutely loves Enid Blyton books

enid blyton

Especially the magic faraway tree & adventures of the wishing chair

My 6 yr old loved the Faraway Tree, but refuses point blank the Wishing Chair...obviously the Rainbow Fairies are still big in our house, and she's mad mad mad about Paddington right now (which is great because slightly more modern but still well written- as opposed to old Enid who is a bit last century) Also reading the Carbonel series and have some classics lined up including Heidi, The Wind in the Willows, The Railway Children, The Secret Garden and the Swiss Family Robinson. (just done hoooooooge Amazon order!)

Oh thanks both for your answers. I wonder if they've read Heidi yet...

dd loves Teddy Robinson. She's nearly 5, but I would imagine she'll still be enjoying it next year. Also can I highly recommend Milly Molly Mandy stories - they are absolutely ancient, but have stood the test of time very well. I loved them when I was little, and still really enjoy them. They aren't girly girly but they are definitely for girls.

DD (7) and DS (5) have been giggling at Clever Polly and the Stupid Wolf here - very amusing tales of how Polly outwits the wolf, not scary and with a great heroine!

Oh i def reccomend Milly molly mandy...there absolutely brilliant
