Halloween ghost stories for mixed age groups?

We always join in with the trick or treating, pumpkin lanterns, dressing up etc but once it gets to about 8 it's all done and dusted round here. So I though that this year we will light the fire, light some candles, bring hthe punkie lanterns in from the garden and I will read ghost stories to the DC. I have a 12yr old, a 10yr old and a 6yr old. DOn't want to frighten them to death but we need a little spine-chilling. Just enough that they have to sleep in the same room that night

I love MR James but fully accept that is ott

Any suggestions for frightening but not too terrifying ghost stories.

How about making up your own? Start off a story and then everyone has to add a part to it - you don't have to write it down, just sitting round the fire would be good & spooky

Hmmmm.... I was afraid someone would suggest something like that . I am appallingly bad at telling stories and if DS#2 got a chance we'd never ever ever reach the end and everyone would be in a coma by the end of the evening! He's the kind of person who can tell a one-liner but turn it into War and Peace and forget the punchline.

My granny used to tell me endless ghost stories. She was brilliant but I can't remember any of them
