Journey to the River Sea - would boys like this book?

I've read the reviews on Amazon and they all seem to mention girls - would it be totally unsuitable for Yr6 boys? Have to choose a class reader without getting a look first, typical school organisation!

The protagonist is a girl, but the story is quite exciting. I think boys would like it too.
Or how about Lionboy by Zizou Corder. Similar themes but a boy protagonist. Very exciting - my DD loved it.
