My son (11 yo) never got into it. He liked the Anthony Horowitz books with Alex Rider and the Unfortunate Series of Events books - but those were a couple of years ago. He just read the Percy Jackson books this summer though and loved them (I clicked on this thread to recommend them instead of Young Bond!) and I think they're all about the same level.

DS reads and re-reads Alex Ryder non-stop but didn't like the Young Bond at all.
Maybe it was too old for him (he is nearly 10).

My boys enjoyed the Young Bond books. They are rather more tongue-in-cheek and less believable than the Alex Rider books, but they are a good read.
