Bedtime reading for 5yr DD like 'My Naughty Little Sister' or 'Little Pete'

Can anyone recommend any books in a similar vein to the wonderful My Naughty Little Sister books or Little Pete stories? (and not the dreadful Rainbow Fairies to which DD is addicted). DD is coming up to 5 and we have virtually exhausted MNLS and there is only one volume of Little Pete stories. She doesn't really 'get' Mrs Pepperpot yet and The Magic Faraway tree is still a bit beyond her but I'm desperate to read something that isn't about those stupid rainbow / weather fairies !

Katy Morag stories go down well, nice illustrations.
Animal ark if she is into animals.
Paddington bear stories.
My lot loved Brere Rabbit.
Will try think of others...

Have you read the Paddington Bear sories yet, they are similar to the MNLS stories, in that they are, quite old fashioned and traditional, my daughter loved them.

I have not tried them yet, but would the Milly Molly Mandy stories be any good ?

We recently read the Pippa Longstocking book, which my daughter loved, but I just found it strange.

Darn, was just going to recommend Magic Faraway Tree as well!

dd2 loves Olga da Polga about a naughty guinea pig. She also likes the Sophie books by Dick King Smith. She has also enjoyed Horrid Henry, The twits, Katie Morag.

Dd1 at a similar age also likes Milly Molly Mandy and Mrs. Pepperpot - although they can be a bit old fashioned

Teddy Robinson is very popular round here at the moment. Or Ramona the Pest.

I find reading Milly MM like watching paint dry... But my DD loves them.
Pippi is good but if she's not up to the FarAway Tree I don't think she'll be up to Pippi.
Also we have the Noddy books from my childhood (not the new versions) and she loves those.
Roald Dahl? James and the Giant Peach is a favourite here, Fantastic Mr Fox was good too.

Oh and the Dr Seuss books? The Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, etc.
And is she too old for the Mog books by Judith Kerr? Mine love them.

DD (5)loves the Naughtiest Girl in the School books(Enid Blyton). In fact I ended up getting them on CD as she will listed over and over. I do wonder sometimes what she makes of boarding schools/dormitories etc.....

dd1 still likes a lot of pictures so The Magic Finger & The Giraffe, the Pelly & Me worked well. Also Winnie the Witch and Horrid Henry.

DD, similar age, loves the wost witch series by Jill Murphy. We're also reading olga da Polga at the moment which is going down well.
If you can't escape the faries then the Gwyneth Rees Fairy books are not as loathsome as the magic rainbow faries and they've got them on the Book People at the moment.(I would do a link but I've no idea how, sorry)
She loves the Clarice Bean books, both the picture ones and the 'novels' (by Lauren Child)
She also loves the BFG but I now have to blow dreams into her every night!

Thank you all some great ideas! Have just started Milly M M which she seems to be enjoying but I and DH are finding a little nauseating! Especially the "Muvver" Favver" and repetative "Milly Molly Mandy".

We also (Me and DH!) loved The Owl who was afraid of the dark but DD1 for some reason wasn't keen - she's a bit too literal and doesn't really get humour...

They are a bit American but the Judy Blume 'Fudge' books are very funny.The second one is called 'Superfudge' but I cant remember the title of the first one.

I think there is a series called Alfie too.

'Clever Polly and the Stupid Wolf' by Catherine Storr is great fun - also all the sequels, which are sadly out of print, but can be found second-hand.

KateGB I feel your pain. Rainbow Fairies most miserable and cynical books ever written for children!!! Committee that writes them tediously picks all currently popular girls' names (Freya, Poppy, Molly etc) and then writes inane story to match so that grandparents rush out to buy them. Shudder.

The Pony Mad Princess books are slightly better, at least you learn a bit about horses.

dd 5 likes the worst witch books, winnie the witch books and the darcey bussell ones about ballet

David Henry Wilson's Jeremy James books (Elephants Don't Sit on Cars,How to Stop a Train with One Finger, Goldfish Don't Play the Violin etc) are great - they are also enjoyable for adults reading them aloud as they have nice touches of subtle humour that parents will appreciate.

Someone's mentioned Ramona the Pest - Beverley Cleary has written about 8 Ramona books and they also have in common with MNLS that they're about a lively little girl with an older sister.

I have just rediscovered Naughty Amelia Jane, Enid Blyton, which has gone down well.

-applejuiceradio - we were introduced to the Rainbow fairies by sommeone who bought it because of DD's name (no she's not called Misty ....). I have a personal hatred of books that are written purely for a commercial point of view so DD is barred from getting books that have been written because of a successful TV programme !

It's OK if the book comes first though as in the truly wonderful Charlie and Lola who I can read (and watch!) time and again.

Will look forward to reading some of the recommendation myself!
