Doctor Dolittle

I can't remember what age I was when I read these. I can only remember that I loved them to bits! Can anyone tell me what age they are suitable for? Also where to start? I think the one I remember best is The Voyages of DOctor D but I'm not sure.

I would have thought that my 7 yo dd would like them a lot.

But do be warned if you have old copies - the first one (The Story of Doctor Dolittle) is very racist, beyond the level that I felt I was happy to give to dd. (Even allowing for discussion of attitudes at the time.)

Looking at wikipedia it suggests that there are modernised versions now available though.
