I first read it myself about 15-20 years ago. I can't remember the name but it was about the moon's face...there was a boy in it who was throwing shoes at the moon...

the only one that I can think of is Papa Please Get the Moon for Me by the same chap who wrote the hungry caterpillar, but there's no stone-throwing in it.
