Books for a christening...

NumptyMum · 13/05/2009 00:42

I need to decide on a christening present to a brother (>1yrs) and sister (>2yrs).

I'm fed up as I knew what I was going to get only both books are out of stock everywhere (I'd planned on getting board books, Hippos go Berserk and Good Night Gorilla as these are favourites of my boy)

So my current options are: get them something they'll enjoy for a few years, perhaps more when they're older:
The Snail and the Whale (Julia Donaldson) and
Dogger (Shirley Hughes)

or get them board books that they can read just now:
The Snail and the Whale again, as board book and
Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy (Lynley Dodd) (board book)

Or there's You are Special by Max Lucado, but I'm not sure whether it's suitable or not, and don't have an alternative to go with it (Velveteen Rabbit being one of the out of stock books...)

Any thoughts or suggestions? slinking off to bed now, will check in morning...

I think for a christening something special is nice - agree the Velveteen Rabbit is classic.

Someone linked to Neil Gaiman's new book The Blueberry Girl recently, and the words were beautiful for the little girl.

This is a good one with a non-religiously specific theme, which may be appropriate: we're a household of active non-believers but found this useful for years as a focus of bedtime thankfulness...

Circle of Days

Thanks for suggestions so far - any others? Or does anyone else think my original books sound OK?

That blueberry girl video is lovely. I wish there was something similar that would show me more of what Circle of Days is like!

I think I'd go for your original ideas - Snail and Whale and Dogger. You can often pick up great books at this siteJulia Donaldson is another good author.
One other suggestion is a memory book about the day...have a look at here- did one about My special day...for my DS and she loves it.
