Need help in making a list of childen's books, please!

We live abroad and DH is going on a quick business trip to London. Top of his to do list is visit a bookstore and stock up on stuff for DCs... I would really appreciate suggestions!

DS is 6.5 and just started reading in English - need nice books for practicing (not ORT - have some of those already); I think Usborne have a nice early reader set, any other suggestions?

DD is almost 5 and into fairies, Charlie and Lola, princesses - the usualgirly stuff. And animals, lots of animals...

If anyone has any favourites, I'd love to hear them!! Thanks!

Also, can anyone recommend any good audio books - they have a couple that they love: Cat in the Hat and a Charlie and Lola, needing some new ones for car trips.

For Audiobooks, mine loved:

The Sophie Stories by Dick King SMith

Also, The Owl who was afraid of the dark, and various Roald Dahl books. (Matilda, George's Marvellous Medicine, Charlie etc)

Thanks Milliways! Sophie sounds great - DD would love that sort of story (she says she wants to be a vet). I remember the Owl book, used to have it as a child. Sounds like it would work well on audio.

They just watched Matilda and really liked it, not sure if it might be too long for them to listen to right now (DS has the attention span of a gnat).

My dd has quite a few of the Animal Ark books on tape which she loves.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions! Am now looking forward to a nice evening checking all these titles out on Amazon (I could have just left it up to DH to pick stuff out when he's there but hmmmm, just know how that's going to end!).

LadyGP - thanks for the thread links... I should have thought of doing a bit of a search first rather then be so lazy!

We have a lot of slightly babyish books which they love (like Each Peach Pear Plum) which are great for DS to practice reading on (he learnt first in local language and only now is tackling English) but it is definitely time to move on to a higher level of bedtime reading!
