Wind in the WIllows

DD is desperate for me to buy 'Wind in the Willows' for her. What sort of reading level is this aimed at? Does anyone know if you can buy an abridged version? Any links if possible. I may buy the full version and read it to her, but she is so keen to read it herself (she saw a WITW production today).

How old is she and what is her reading level? It seems from a quick search on Amazon you can get anything from this picture book through abridged versions to the full thing, which IIRC contains fairly complex language.

Why not get the full length book out of the library & let her have a go at it - then read it to her if she gets stuck - and no money wasted if she doesn't like it
IMO there is quite a bit of complex language but plenty of context to put it in & I think that a relatively young child would probably still enjoy it even if they didn't understand everything (and they could always read it again when they were older). Maybe 8 yrs or up?

Oh I love the look of the abridged one! We love Inga Moore as an illustrator (Six Dinner Sid author too). Her reading age is 12yrs+, but her comprehension is around the 8yr mark. She does get a bit overwhlemed with the amount of text on a page but that I guess is down to her age rather than her inability to read and comprehend.
Since we practically live at the library I should try there first really!

I have an old copy with the illustrations by E H Shepherd which is lovely. The drawings break up the text.
If you can find a copy like this I think she would have no problem.
