I loved Mallory Towers and St.Clare's and would borrow them from the library over and over again.
Happy days.

What's with the Bratz style illustrations on the cover of the books? See stinkyfeets link to amazon website above.

How dare they go all modern 'n' trendy!!

eloisetasty · 16/02/2009 23:51

Yes they were quite horrid to anyone who didn't fit in, but then Gwendoline wasn't really homesick as I recall, just putting it on for attention

I'd have been po faced Sally with her sensible solid ways

Loved the books as a child and recently found them on tape. Listened endlessly when pregnant. I still felt a shiver when Darrell was summoned to Miss Grayling's office!

Poor Gwendoline having her "corners rubbed off" I felt sorry for her now! not when I was a child, obviously

ooh i loved these, and also the chalet school books - anyone know them? can't remember the author

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 06/03/2009 14:10

Elinor M Brent-Dyer wrote the Chalet School books. They haven't been in print for years and are huge collectors items now - especially the hardbacks.

really??? I must ask my mum which ones she still has in the loft.

and thanks for that.

stayfrosty I was the poor old sod who hated games and cried and got given apple pie beds!!

I went to boarding school and hated it. Before I went someone told me it would be just like Malory Towers (which I loved). It was easy enough to enjoy the books and think that I would never be homesick and upset like Gwendoline but the reality was quite different!

I sometimes wonder whether reading them did me more harm than good as it set up certain expectations, both of boarding school and myself, which could never be lived up to. But perhaps I am being too precious (like Gwendoline again!!)

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 06/03/2009 14:23

I know exactly what you mean TheApprentice. They would never have persuaded me to go to boarding school if it were not for Malory Towers and the Chalet School. The reality was very different... imagine in six years we never had ONE midnight feast.
At least not that I was invited to anyway.
And I was rubbish at hockey.

Flier - check out your mum's attic, you could be sitting on a fortune!

I loved Malory Towers and introduced DD to them. She too has read them many, many times.

I was surprised and pleased though when she decided for herself that the way the others treated Gwendoline was bullying really. I don't think I was that astute at her age.
