Should hold which books?

I am trying to compile a list of fabulous books every child (any age) should have - so what's on your bookshelf, what do you love and what do your children love.

HelensMelons - Alison Uttley wrote the Little Grey Rabbit books didn't she? We have a couple in the cupboard put away fro DD when she's older.

Fennel · 18/01/2009 20:06

Alison Uttley wrote A Traveller in Time (which I liked as a child) and Little grey rabbit and some sentimental gush about A Country Child which I didn't like much.

PavlovtheCat · 18/01/2009 20:10

currently for dd aged 2.5 we have, and think all children should absolutely have:

picture books:
Dear Zoo - has been DDs absolute favourite for a long time
We're going on a bear hunt
Each peach pear plum
The very hungry caterpiller
The tiger who came to tea
Mog the forgetful cat
Where the wild things are
The gruffalo (and the grufalo's child)
Guess how much I love you (ideally the enormous version!)
Various collections of nursery rhymes - traditional ones.

Bedtime stories:
Brothers grim collection
Beatrice Potter collection- an absolute must
Asops fables (DH thinks this is a must!)
Hands Christian Anderson

As she grows up:
Roald Dahl - all of them
Wind in the Willow
Rudyard Kyplin
The Hobbit
The Lord of the Rings

At christmas:
The Night Before Christmas
One Snowy Day
25 December Lane

We have many many more books than this, but these are the 'must haves' that I would recommend to others, of which they have pretty much all been recommended already!
