trying to find a book ...

I remember a historical fiction book I used to read.
I thought it was Eagle of the ninth but not sure. The hero was Gideon and it was a story of two boys one a Roman's son and the other a tribesman's son. The tribes were beaten and he was befriended by the Roman boy and had adventures - cannot remember the rest

Does anyone have any clues?

Amazon have it, it was originally published in the 1950s and is by Rosemary Sutcliff.

Rosemary Sutcliffe wrote lots of really good historical books, I used to love them as a child (maybe 10+?).

The plot you describe is not Eagle of the Ninth, but might be another book by Rosemary Sutcliff. (I have recently read Eofthe9th to my class and there was no Gideon in it.) However, she has written brilliant historical novels for children - try Warrior Scarlet.

I am pretty sure that the book you are thinking of is Legions of the Eagle by Henry Treece. The two boys are called Gwydion and Gaius.
