What is your 6 year old dd reading?

Dd will be 6 soon - she's reading really well independently and I would like to get her some books for her birthday.

I have an older ds and although she likes some of the books he enjoyed at this age (eg Blyton, Milly Molly Mandy) she would like to have some books which are 'hers'.

Any suggestions for me?

Hi foo... just posted on your other thread. My other dd is 6. She likes books like Magic Puppy/Kitten/Add Other Cute Animal To Taste, Little Animal Ark, Rainbow Fairies, etc. They are all singularly awful with formulaic and basically interchangeable 'plots', but she is happy reading them for now, so I'm letting her get on with it.

Dick King-Smith is also good for that age group. Dd1 really got going with him, and I'm trying to move dd2 away from assorted cuddly things and into his general direction....

Mind you, dd2 luurrves her cute-and-cuddlies. She also likes magazines like 'Animals and You' and spends hours looking at the pictures and going 'aawwwwwww'! Bless her!

She hasn't really got on with rainbow fairies - i think she sees them as a bit babyish! (The fairy aspect I mean). Will have a look at Animal Ark.

She likes Enid Blyton which is nothing if not formulaic, so that wouldn't be too much of a problem (as long as I can read something a bit more interesting to her).

She might like Dick King-Smith, then.

Mine likes The Naughtiest Girl in the School.

She's not a particularly keen reader but likes these. Oh and she also liked those Sally Gardener books. The Boy Who Could Fly etc

Oops, didn't mean to press 'post'. Was going to say that you've got off lightly with the Rainbow Fairies... I refused to read any more of them aloud after reading about 5 of them... I just couldn't stand any more.

Horrid Henry, My Naughty Little Sister, Dick King-Smith, Jeremy Strong, Colour Young Puffin, Usbourne early readers (range of the classics in easier to read format - good for a shorter reading session), etc

I pick up lots of books from out local charity shops, so whatever they have there really!

Mine currently likes Horrid Henry, Jeremy Strong, Classic Tales, and Geronimo Stilton.

The Worst Witch books by Jill Murphy are a big hit in our house. Also Arabel's raven series by Joan Atkin, Pippi Longstocking, the novel versions of Clarice Bean and Jeremy Strong, though I am still mostly reading to her.

I am hoping that DD3 will have worked her way through the entire Rainbow Fairies oeuvre soon. She is reading a couple a night at present. I tried to interest her in Josie Smith instead but she rejected it out of hand.
But she does like Junie B Jones and I thoroughly recommend it to you.
And I like Josie Smith.

my dd also loves the fairy books, there are loads of them

she also loved a book called 'pookie' although i think it's hard to get a copy of

pippi, horrid henry, magic carousel horse series, lost kitten, daisy books (nick sharratt)

She may enjoy the Magic Tree House series by Mary Pope Osbourne eg Valley of the Dinosaurs, Castle of Mystery ect (see Amazon). These are adventure stories about a brother & sister - my dd is really enjoying them. Also you could try Ottoline and the Yellow Cat & Ottoline goes to School by Chris Riddell.
