The 'Little House on the Prarie' series. Starts with 'Little House in the Big Woods'.
Brilliant stories, I still love reading them now.

Although may be considered more girly(?), but still all the excitement of real adventure stories.

Boyish ones - Just William. Got to love him.

Susan Cooper books - Over Sea, Under Stone, The Dark is Rising etc?

And Narnia books?

My Family and Other Animals - can't remember if that's too old.

How to Train Your Dragon - Cressida Cowell. These are just utterly brilliant - we've just started the 3rd in the series and DS turned 7 last weekend. He adores them.

Any of the Roald Dahl books, always a big hit in our house with dd nearly 7 and ds1 4.

is he too young for Dumas? Three musketeeers, Count of Monte Cristo (though they are long, it'll take you a while to work through them)
