providing alternatives to 'standard Christian' stories at school

dd1 is coming home from school with comments like 'God created the world in 7 days, Mummy.' When I counter it with things like 'Well, that's what some people believe' or try to talk simply about evolution etc. she simply responds with 'but Mrs XXXX said he did!'

we would like to find some books or other materials that will present alternative stories, either from other world religions or that are a bit varied from the standard Christian view - she is very definite that God is male, so any books about Mother God/ Mother Earth out there as well?

does that make sense? she has just started Yr 1

Arrggghh. Most christians in this country don't believe that even (and come to think for creationists its 6 days not 7!)

Sorry I don't have any book titles to hand - DDs reading books in juniors have included one or two other creation myths so there must be some out there.

Oh I know - Atticus the Storytellers 100 Greek myths does the greek ones (including their version of the flood).

Apart from evolution, the other great thing to inject reality into a child is geology. Fossil hunting, talking matter-of-factly about how old the earth is.

And frankly someone ought to have a word with Mrs X. Totally unacceptable to tell as truth myths that fly in the face of scientific fact.

The Kingfisher Treasury Myths and Legends is nice. It has a Nigerian story about how the sun married the moon and they invited water to stay and water brought so many friends that sun and moon have to live in the sky.

Try searching Amazon. They have a book called Creation stories from around the world but I haven't read it.
