Just felt an overwhelming urge to read this and can't find my copy ANYWHERE, so just ordered it. Anyone remember it? SUCH a lovely book, can't wait to read it to dd!

Henriettas House - has anyone else read the adult book with the same people, City of Bells ? Not as enchanting, but still a good read

Will go and get Little White Horse out to read now !

mymblemummy · 13/07/2008 22:32

I preferred Henrietta's House to City of Bells too. I think her children's books are more successful overall, much less cloying.

I liked Linnets and Valerians (also published as The Runaways) just as much as Henrietta's House and The Little White Horse.

Wasn't The Little White Horse reprinted because JK Rowling said it was her childhood favourite?

I'm reading it to DD at the moment.
Maria has just woken up on her first day at Moonacre Manor.
I had forgotten how wonderfully written it was.
I purchased it on ebay about a month or so ago after being on a baby names thread about the name Loveday.

flyingmum · 16/07/2008 17:49

Isn't Loveday such a fab name. There was a really nice Loveday in the Chalet School stories as well.

I loved Little White Horse - isn't her room just the best little girl's room ever?

differentID · 16/07/2008 18:27

It's a gorgeous room- I would have killed for a room like it as a teenager.
You used to read the CS series as well? no one else I knew did, they all read point horror and sweet valley high. That was Loveday Perowne in the CS wasn't it. I love the name Loveday if we ever have a little girl, but it just won't sound right with our surname.

differentID · 16/07/2008 18:29

Little White Horse has never been out of print has it?

SorenLorensen · 16/07/2008 18:36

I love that book (and I still have my copy, so I might dig it out and take it on holiday). I remember an interview with J.K. Rowling where she said that she wanted the same level of detail in the Harry Potter books as Elizabeth Goudge used in TLWH -remember the pages and pages about the food they eat in TLWH - down to the shapes of the pastry crusts? That was her inspiration for all the detail about the meals at Hogwarts, and details like the long lists of what Harry will need at Hogwarts - cauldron, 1, black...that kind of thing.

It's the only time I have a bit of a pang at having two boys...I can't see them ever really being keen on The Little White Horse, or Anne of Green Gables, or Little Women...
