Georgie, her twin brothers, her friend Susan and another boy, Tarquin, go to Gwynt in Wales for a riding holiday. When they arrive there's nobody at home to meet them. They meet a young girl called Lucy, who was living with the owners of the pony centre, before the man was sent to prison for supposedly stealing some money and the woman was hospitalised. Lucy is worried that she will be taken into care.

Rumours abound of a ghost pony moving over a mountain pass. Georgie and half the party rescue an elderly lady in distress the other side of the Pony Pass. But there's a landslide and they're cut off from the others so George rides over the Pony Pass to bring them supplies. The secret of the stolen money is resolved and Lucy is reunited with the couple who've been looking after her.
